SCHOOL ACTIVITIES AND FOR OTHER COLLECTIVES

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Environmental Education activities are targeting first and second educational levels and social groups such as youth centres, hikers, environmental volunteers, hunters, tourists, etc. These cover the characteristics and conservation of certain ecosystems in general and protected species in particular, such as the Black Vulture.

The main objectives, inter alia, are:

  1. To foster the knowledge about the nature and environment of Mallorca, with a focus on the black vulture and its habitat, the Sierra de Tramuntana, and other protected species.
  2. To generate a reflection on the relation between human and nature.
  3. To facilitate instruments of involvement for the active participation in the solution of environmental problems.

School activities adapted to different age groups:

The Black Vulture and the Sierra de Tramuntana:

  • The Black Vulture, its biology, its ecological function and necessities, as well as its conservation.
  • Visit of the observatory of the Vultures where it is possible to observe them from close.
  • Activities and games related to the issue:
    • For the youngest: handcraft, story-telling, games that deal the principal concepts.
    • Short visit of the oak forest of the finca as one example of the mediterranean forest: identification of different tree and plant species, listening to the noises of the forest ...
    • For major ages, "The Landscape of Mallorca": Observation of the landscape, identification and interpretation of the different land uses.

The honey bee and its relation with the flowers:

  • Short introduction on the black vulture, its biology, its ecological function and necessities, as well as its conservation with a visit of the observatory of the vultures where it is possible to observe them from close.
  • Visit of the garden: sensorial walk (feel, smell, see); the plants, its ecological function as well as traditional and medicinal uses
  • Visit of the beehive: the products of the bees; functioning and organization of the bee colony in a safety way as the beehive is specially designed for safe observation.
  • Activities and games related to the issue:
    • For the youngest: handcraft, story-telling, games that deal the principal concepts.
    • Work in the garden: planting of seeds and other activities depending on the season.
    • For major ages: scientific investigation on main issues of the visit.
